1. Esperanto in or out? MEPs to vote: March 29-31

MPs throughout the EU are being lobbied to support a petition for the reinstatement of a reference to Esperanto in a proposal to the European Parliament, which will be debated during the coming week (March 29-31). The report concerns multilingualism in the enlarged EU, and was produced by the Parliament's Committee on Constitutional Affairs.

The original draft, written by the committee's rapporteur Gianfranco Dell'Alba, included a clause mentioning Esperanto as a possible pivot language in the European Parliament. However, a subsequent amendment to remove this reference was narrowly passed by 14 votes to 12. The lobbying of MEPs is now aimed at reinstating this reference to Esperanto.

Supporters of Esperanto are now being urged to lobby their MEPs by the European Esperanto Centre in Brussels, before the crucial vote in Strassbourg.

The wording of the original proposal ... [Read more at http://gxangalo.com/britio/modules/news/article.php?storyid=99 ]

2. London takes a breath of fresh air

When Flavio Rebelo arrived in London for his presentation of international Television in Esperanto, he didn't expect a turnout of more than about twenty from the 'quiet' Esperanto movement in Britain. So when he was faced with an enthusiastic audience of forty Esperanto speakers at the London Esperanto Club on March 19, he realised that he had struck a chord with the natives.

Flavio was coming to the end of his grand lecture tour of Europe, promoting a project to set up international television in Esperanto as a going commercial concern. He had arrived directly from Rome, where he had been in talks with the president of the Universal Esperanto Association, Professor Renato Corsetti, and was yet to visit Portugal, via Rome, for his final lecture of the trip.

The London audience was visibly ... [Read more at http://gxangalo.com/britio/modules/news/article.php?storyid=100 ]

4. Problems registering on Esperanto Britain?

The Editor has had one or two queries from users having problems in entering their passwords with Esperanto Britain, and so he has kept this newsletter going a bit longer for those who haven't yet registered on the website. The advantage in registering on the website rather than asking him to do it is that you can then change your email address, for instance, at any time.

It may be that a few problems are arising from not having exited from the previous session.  Most have occasionally experienced this. The solution in this case is to click on the 'Logout' option in the user menu, then trying again. (An alternative is the 'Eliru' option in the top line in Esperanto).

To register with Esperanto Britain, point your browser at http://www.esperantobritain.com , click on the 'Register now!' link, under the logon boxes, and you will be prompted for a username and password. To register for the newsletter, click on 'Newsletter' in the menu, and then on 'Subscribe'.

If you prefer, do send an email, and the editor will register you for the newsletter directly. Happy reading!
