A finicky verbs like 'droni' retains its effect

Students of Esperanto have no need for tables of irregular verbs.  They know all verbs follow the same pattern for person, number, tense and all that.  However some other lists of verbs may be useful.  Esperanto verbs often have tighter, more precise definitions or range of meanings than their equivalents in English.  Study the following.

Take the verb ‘drown’ in English.  It can mean ‘to die by suffocation in water (or other liquid)‘ or it may mean ‘to kill by suffocation in water, etc‘.  It has a range of meanings.  Many English verbs are like this.  So compare – (a) “the black cat (unfortunately) drowned in the fast-flowing river” and (b) “the man (knowlingly) drowned the ginger cat in the fast-flowing river” .  The context decides which meaning.  The black cat in (a) died by some unfortunate accident, while the ginger one in (b) was deliberately killed.  The bracketed comments ‘unfortunately’ and ‘knowingly’ are added here to leave the reader in no doubt.

Esperanto leaves less to context, less to chance.  Its role is as the user’s second, even secondary language.  In this example it needs to distinguish clearly between dying and killing!  So, the Esperanto equivalent ‘dronas’ has only the first meaning, ‘dies by suffocation in water (or other liquid’).  The Esperanto equivalent for the second meaning, ‘kills by suffocation in water‘ shows up clearly –  ‘la viro dronigis la katon’, i.e. ‘he caused the cat to die (by suffocation in water)‘.

Unfortunately Esperanto dictionaries do not usually have the space to spell out such definitions in full.  They use shorthand.  They call verbs like ‘droni’ ‘intransitive‘, because that means something happens on its own.  The term ‘intransitive’ is often abbreviated to ‘intr‘ or even ‘nt‘.   It means that the action is contained and not transmitted to any second party.

Here are some other Esperanto verbs like droni.  Definitions are given in English and examples in Esperanto, but to avoid confusion the ‘normal’ dictionary equivalents are not usually included.

It is recommended that such verbs are learnt in pairs with appropriate examples.  The use of ‘igi’ – ‘to cause to happen’ – converts the action to one which affects some second party ‘Y’.
